The Blue Mountains Permaculture Institute will be running a Permaculture Design Course on Friday evenings and Saturdays, fortnightly from Friday 13 May to Saturday 27 August (excluding the long weekend). This is a great opportunity for those who would like to take the time to fully absorb and integrate permaculture ethics, principles and design strategies, and offers a pathway to completing the internationally recognised course around other work or family commitments.
Teachers will include Rosemary Morrow, Lis Bastian, Marita Sydes and Danielle Wheeler.
This is an opportunity to work with teachers who have a diverse experience in urban, rural and international settings, as well as social permaculture, permaculture in business, and permaculture strategies for growing regional resilience at government level.
The class size is limited so bookings essential.

Saturdays: 9am – 6pm (14 May, 28 May, 18 June, 2 July, 16 July, 30 July, 13 August, 27 August)

TEACHERS:
ROSEMARY MORROW:
Rowe originally studied agricultural science at the Sorbonne, in Paris, but then developed a passion for learner-centred teaching in the community. She walked away from formal education and has been teaching permaculture for 30 years. To this day she is still fascinated by adult non-formal education and the respect it demands from the teacher for students’ prior knowledge and skills. She regards teaching and learning as generous reciprocal acts and has taught permaculture in many unusual and challenging places off the beaten track.
LIS BASTIAN:
Lis has been a Permaculture practitioner and teacher with Rosemary Morrow for around 10 years, and is the co-founder of the Blue Mountains Permaculture Institute. She has been an Al Gore trained Climate Ambassador, Climate Adaptation Officer for 17 Councils in Central NSW, lecturer in Environmental Management, and is the founder of The Big Fix, a Solutions Media news service. After a long and varied career in arts and cultural development that preceded these positions, it is the ‘design’ elements and the systems thinking approach of permaculture that have always appealed to her. She is also a writer and artist.
MARITA SYDES:
Marita Sydes has over 30 years experience in natural resource management in a range of roles ranging from rare plant management, botanical surveys, revegetation, native vegetation management and Landcare. Along with academic qualifications in natural resource management Marita completed her PDC with Rowe Morrow and Lis Bastian in Orange in 2010 and followed this with Permaculture Teachers Training with Rowe Morrow at Milkwood in 2012. In 2012 Marita also completed the Milkwood Forest Garden workshop with Dan Harris.
In her role as Landcare Coordinator for Central Tablelands Landcare for the past 8 years Marita has coordinated a range of projects on biodiversity conservation on farm, grazing management and soil health as well as delivered a range of Permaculture training events such as introduction to Permaculture, planning your vegetable garden and forest gardening in Orange.
Marita has extensive experience in adult education with over 15 years experience teaching and inspiring a range of adult learners in topics ranging from native vegetation management on farms to native plant identification and Permaculture – having taught Conservation and Land Management for TAFE Western, lectured in organic agriculture, biodynamics and Permaculture in the Ecological Agriculture degree at Charles Sturt University and coordinated the delivery of a range of training programs through her work with Central Tablelands Landcare.
Marita has an ongoing commitment to not only the conservation of our native vegetation but also to working with community to develop and promote more sustainable food production models – where we rely less on synthetic chemicals and long transport distances (food miles) in food production – the teachings of Permaculture are a means of achieving this.
DANIELLE WHEELER:
Danielle Wheeler is a permaculture teacher, designer and community activist from the Hawkesbury Valley. NSW. A former research scientist, she completed her PDC with Rowe and Lis in 2009 before starting Humble Designs Permaculture, which aims to bring affordable, practical sustainability to Western Sydney. Danielle heads Permaculture Sydney West’s education team and is an executive member of the Hawkesbury Environment Network. She enjoys the intersection of traditional knowledge, science and ethics that makes permaculture a force for hope. Danielle homeschools, gardens and battles fruit fly between teaching gigs.
